The ideal of the educated, or cultured,  person is something that was created during the time of enlightenment. This is a period roughly from the late 17th century to the end of the 19th.But what would the term enlightened mean in the 21'st century?

Self portrait of me, working towards enlightenment.

The enlightenment included a range of ideas centered on the value of human happiness, the pursuit of knowledge obtained by reason, and the evidence of the senses. Popular ideals were: liberty, progress, toleration, fraternity, constitutional government, and the separation of church and state.

The ideal of the educated, or enlightened, person was somebody who know all of the available science, appreciated art, and generally was well rounded in the science and culture of the day. During this time it was common that young noblemen after concluding their education made a journey through Europe, with Italy as a key destination. This trip, the Grand Tour, was regarded as a rite of passage and usually the young nobleman was accompanied by a tutor.

But how do you become an enlightened man in the 21:st century? The body of knowledge has grown exponentially in the 200 years since then, and so has the volume of all forms of art and music. It would be impossible to learn everything, listen to all music, and so on.

Maybe it's true that you only become educated in your obituary. It is a lifelong journey, and this is the one of me. Welcome to join me, when I explore the science, technology, and art of today.

It's a very interesting journey, at least in my opinion
